Transfigured

This Sunday’s gospel is the Transfiguration. After reading it (I always try to read the Sunday gospel ahead of time!) and reflecting on it I feel that I can relate to Peter. Peter’s response to the glory that he saw before him was “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

What Peter was experience was a spiritual high, a moment of conversion. I have had these experiences in my life. When I am feeling a spiritual high, I don’t want to leave. I want to build a tent and stay there forever. I want to bask in the glory of the Lord and the saints.

As important as those moments are in our faith journey, we cannot stay in them. Those deeply spiritual moments that we have in our lives are there to nourish us for our journey. They are designed to strengthen us to carry out God’s will in our lives. Just as God the Father spoke to Peter, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him” we are called to listen to the call of Jesus in our lives. Jesus had a plan for Peter and the apostles. He has a plan for us. We need to come down off of our “mountaintop experiences”, roll up our sleeves, and get to work doing God’s will in our lives.
